Sign of the times: Arlington Hts. to close teen center

Arlington Heights Teen Center supporters brought a top-ten list of money-raising ideas, but were unable to convince the village board Tuesday night to reverse its decision to close the center on April 30.

Eliminating the center's $378,000 yearly cost is a key element in village efforts to close a budget deficit originally projected at more than $8 million. Trustees had agreed, however, in December to delay the center's closing until the end of the village's fiscal year to give staff and supporters time to look for replacement funding.

Kathy Scortino, co-chairwoman of the Arlington Heights Youth Commission and a member of the ad hoc committee formed to investigate alternate funding, presented fundraising ideas including charging an entry fee and inserting donation requests into the local water bills. But she acknowledged that would still likely leave a gap of nearly six figures.

Cost-cutting efforts have slashed the expected deficit for 2011 to about $329,000, and...

Man dies after being subdued by Midlothian cops

A Riverdale man died early this morning after being subdued by police during a traffic stop, authorities said.

Jaesun Ingles, 31, of the 14300 block of South Normal Avenue, was pronounced dead at MetroSouth Hospital in Blue Island at 12:31 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

He died after having trouble breathing while being restrained by officers, Midlothian police said in a news release.

Midlothian police stopped a car driven by Ingles about 11 p.m. Tuesday in the 14600 block of Pulaski Road in Midlothian for several traffic violations, police said in the release. An officer  smelled marijuana and found a small amount of the drug following a search of Ingles, police said.

Bribery trial could get underway today for developer

Opening statements are likely today in the bribery trial of developer Calvin Boender after lawyers questioned more than 30 prospective jurors Tuesday.

Boender is accused of paying for almost $40,000 in home improvements for then-Chicago Ald. Isaac "Ike" Carothers, 29th, to win his support for a large real estate development in his West Side ward.
On Tuesday, lawyers questioned two panels of prospective jurors, asking if they had any experience dealing with Chicago's zoning system or ever had contact with aldermen or Mayor Richard Daley.

Attorneys are expected to wrap up jury selection Wednesday before making their opening remarks.

Push for Civil War hero to receive Medal of Honor

The secretary of the Army says a Wisconsin Civil War hero deserves the Congressional Medal of Honor.

U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold, a Wisconsin Democrat, has been lobbying on behalf of a group of Wisconsin citizens pushing for Alonzo H. Cushing to receive the award. Cushing, from Delafield west of Milwaukee, fought in several battles, including Bull Run and Gettysburg, where he was seriously wounded during Pickett's Charge. But he stayed in the fight and was killed.

Secretary of the Army John McHugh has sent Feingold a letter saying he will recommend Congress approve the award. McHugh says Cushing clearly distinguished himself.

Man dies after jumping into river to elude police

A man given probation just two days ago for criminal damage to property died Tuesday night after plunging into the Chicago River while being chased by police for tagging a building.

Jason Kitchekeg, 26, of Mokena was one of three men being chased by officers for spray-painting a building on Ashland Avenue, police said.

Cops caught two of the men, but Kitchekeg jumped into the river near the 2800 block of South Ashland, officials said.

Aided by a helicopter, the police Marine Unit and Fire Department personnel worked for about 30 minutes to rescue the man after he was spotted at about 6:45 p.m. in the river near Bubbly Creek.

Firefighters pulled Kitchekeg from the water and he was rushed to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:16 p.m., according to hospital spokesman Marcel Bright.

Court records show Kitchekeg had pleaded guilty several times to graffiti-related charges. On Monday, he was sentenced to one year of probatio...
